State Farm to enter into deal with Louisiana regarding slab cases

I missed this story by Lavonne Kuykendall last week but caught it yesterday on the Hurricane Katrina homepage of a Dutch stock exchange website — the internet is an odd and fascinating place.  The story says State Farm is close to a deal with Louisiana Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon to reopen some 400 to 1000 slab claims.  The deal at this point involves only slab cases, which will be treated similarly to the way they are in the deal State Farm cut with Mississippi earlier this year: owners of homes that were completely eradicated will get at least 50 percent of the home’s value.  Seems like a smart strategy to me, especially with Louisiana jurors looking like they’ve got itchy trigger fingers.
