A Dutch insurer is offering insurance for businesses to cover payments to workers who call out sick so they can watch the World Cup next month. Question: given the selection bias inherent is this type of insurance — those businesses that have this problem are the ones that will want the insurance –on what level does this make sense? Of course, insurance companies in Europe often walk hand-in-hand with government, so there may be some kind of state subsidy behind all this. But really, European workers take so much time off already, what’s the big deal if they miss a couple extra days? There has to be more to the story.
